Wedding Songs – When a Man Loves a Woman

Our thoughts: Occasionally you get a song in which the lyric matches the melody so perfectly that no one can really mess it up… add to that the natural angst and emotion of Percy Sledge or Michael Bolton and the song starts to live in some fifth dimension where it exist as some kind of emotion… all within itself. this song, and a few select recordings of it, fall into that category of “fifth dimensional songs” that I just invented:) Having said that, when this song is sung poorly, or by the wrong person, it’s just plain painful to listen to.

Lyrics – When A Man Loves A Woman

When a man loves a woman
Can’t keep his mind on nothin’ else
He’d trade the world
For a good thing he’s found
If she is bad, he can’t see it
She can do no wrong
Turn his back on his best friend
If he puts her down

When a man loves a woman
Spend his very last dime
Trying to hold on to what he needs
He’d give up all his comforts
And sleep out in the rain
If she said that’s the way
It ought to be

When a man loves a woman
I give you everything I got (yeah)
Trying to hold on
To your precious love
Baby please don’t treat me bad

When a man loves a woman
Deep down in his soul
She can bring him such misery
If she is playing him for a fool
He’s the last one to know
Loving eyes can never see

Yes when a man loves a woman
I know exactly how he feels
‘Cause baby, baby, baby
I am a man
When a man loves a woman

Song Details From Wikipedia:

“When a Man Loves a Woman” is a song written by Calvin Lewis and Andrew Wright which was recorded by Percy Sledge[1] in 1966 at Norala Sound Studio in Sheffield, Alabama. It made number one on both theBillboard Hot 100 and R&B singles charts.[2] It was listed 53rd in the List of Rolling Stone magazine’s 500 greatest songs of all time. The sidemen for this recording included Spooner Oldham, organ; Marlin Greene, guitar; Albert “Junior” Lowe, bass and Roger Hawkins, drums. The music is built around a commonly used descending bass line chord progression as in Pachelbel’s canon, or Bach’s Air on the G string.

It was later covered by Michael Bolton in 1991, whose version also reached number one on the U.S. pop and adult contemporary singles charts (Bolton received a Grammy Award for this song).

The Michael Bolton version has the distinction of being the last number one song to chart on the old Billboard Hot 100 charting system which relied on sales and airplay reports before switching over to Soundscan.

Barbara Mandrell recorded a country version of the song that same year. The song has also been recorded by Jerry Butler, Art Garfunkel, Luba, and Karen Dalton.

Sledge’s version was also a top ten hit in the UK peaking at number four on its initial release and peaking at number two in 1987 after it was featured in a Levi’s Jeans commercial.
